John G. Fee Internship - Interpretation, Education, and Visitor Services
Camp Nelson National Monument is a newly created unit of the National Park Service. This internship will provide opportunities to work within and learn about how the NPS interprets and provides visitor services at this Civil War to Civil Rights site. This internship will also be a unique opportunity to be involved with building the Interpretive division and the visitor services at a new NPS site. Additionally, this internship will also be a chance to conduct research needed to advance the understanding and interpretation of Camp Nelson National Monument.
Projects include but are not limited to the following:
• Orientation to the NPS Mission and how that mission is achieved at Camp Nelson NM and other unites of the NPS.
• Orientation and training on visitor services operations including the Visitor Center, Museum, and Barracks and conducting guided programs on the grounds.
• Assisting park staff and partners with anniversary programs and special events
• Conduct research on the soldiers, civilians, and refugees who were at Camp Nelson during the Civil War and post-war period.
• Conduct research on the African American soldiers who are buried at cemeteries across Kentucky.
• Assist park staff with interpretive programs, including social media posts, digital media, videos, and photography.
• Perform Living History Demonstrations (Military and Civilian), including small arms (muskets) and cannons. [Optional]
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: (desired, but may not be required)
• Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in history, public history, museum management, education, or work with youth
• Excellent customer service and communications skills
• Desire to work with youth audiences
• Experience in public speaking and visual and social media communications
• Interest in interpretation, education, or museums
• Knowledge of subject matter, including Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation, and the early civil rights movement
• Dependability and punctuality
Additional qualifications:
• Must be able to pass a federal background check
• Must be between 16 and 30 years of age
• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
• Driver's License required
Work is primarily performed indoors. The job may entail prolonged standing or walking. The position will require the physical ability to work in all weather conditions and perform some light lifting (<50lbs).
Summer, 10 weeks, Full-Time, including weekends, 9am-5pm, start/end dates TBD
Intern will report to NPS staff. All new staff will participate in a 2-week orientation training. Check-ins will be conducted on a weekly basis to include mid and end-of-summer reviews. It is our intent that the intern would learn or enhance from this experience – active listening, organization, brainstorming, documentation, communication skills, public speaking, networking, a general understanding of the NPS.
