Coal impacts team assistant

Appalachian Voices works to address impacts to workers, communities and the environment caused by coal-mining. In recent years, we have helped pass legislation to clean up abandoned coal mines, and to fund healthcare for miners with black lung disease. We have filed lawsuits forcing coal companies to reclaim disturbed land and clean up polluted waterways. Our work has been featured in countless regional and national news outlets, and in Congressional testimonies. You can be a part of this exciting and important work!

We value your time, and pay $15/ hour.

Appalachian Voices' Coal Impacts Team projects include:

  •  Water and air quality monitoring in coal mine-impacted areas of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee
  • Community organizing and grassroots lobbying in support of stronger health and safety regulations for coal miners at risk of developing black lung disease, and in support of measures to ensure environmental cleanup of coal mines
  • Research and analysis regarding the environmental and economic impacts of active and idled coal mines
  • Developing evidence of regulatory infractions by mining companies for potential administrative complaints, lawsuits or media strategies

Position can be remote, but ability to travel for events and environmental monitoring within the Appalachian region is a plus. We are especially interested in applicants who are from and/ or living in the Appalachian coalfield region.
